Adilabad: Despite being rich in natural resources, Adilabad district continues to be the most backward district in the State.

The Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao should fulfil his promise of getting the Cement factory re-opened, demanded the denizens of the district during the 'Dasa-Disa’ programme organised by HMTV on Saturday.

The debate, which was attended by intellectuals, politicians, farmers, students and Adivasis provided insight into the problems being faced by the people living on the northern tip of Telangana.

The participants said the district was already well-connected by railway and road and if the district got an airport the process of development can be put on fast track.

Speaking on the occasion, former Minister Ramachandra Reddy held both the State and Central governments responsible for the delay in taking decision in regard to reopening of the cement factory which would be beneficial in terms of generating district’s revenue and employment to thousands of youth.

He explained that since it was public undertaking, local MP should raise the issue in Parliament. However, since the Chief Minister had promised, he should pursue the issue with Centre.

The factory can be reopened if the State government allocated Rs 270 crores towards clearing the pending dues, he felt.

District TRS leaders and BJP leaders blamed each other for the delay in reopening of the cement factory. While Bhima Reddy TRS held that State government was pursuing the issue with Centre, BJP leader Shankar said the ball was in State government’s court as it had failed to spend the much-needed Rs 270 crore.
Woes of cotton farmers

The farmer’s of the Adilabad felt neglected by the consecutive governments. They alleged that the suicides by the farmers were underestimated by the government. Hundreds had committed suicide due to financial problems after formation of Telangana State, but official records showed that there were over 20 suicides only, they said.

Karunakar Reddy, who had studied the trend, felt that Central government schemes like Fasal Bhima Yojana were of no help. He alleged that the Central government came to power by promising 50 per cent hike in MSP, but it had increased only by Rs 50 per annum.

Nandi Ramaiah of New Democracy blamed the State government for misguiding farmers to sow Soya bean. Most of the farmers who followed the advice of the government had suffered losses, this season.

Manasa, a student said her father discontinued farming as he suffered heavy losses and left for war-torn Iraq for the sake of family.

The Adivasi farmers present on the occasion demanded that the government ensure that they get MSP, as the middlemen were taking them for a ride over the market price.

The Dasa Disa was moderated by P Venkatakrishna Chief Editor Debates and Discussions.
