Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad has questioned the Telangana state government as to why no case was registered against police officials concerned in Nerella torture case despite the victims making complaints.

Making the Karimnagar Range Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) as a Respondent on its own, the High Court ordered him to submit a detailed report on the suspension of Sub-Inspector of Police in this case.

“If the SI was performing his duties of safeguarding the law and order in the area, as you claim, then instead of promoting him, why did you suspend him.” the Court asked the DIG.

The division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice J. Uma Devi gave these directions on Wednesday, while hearing the Public Interest Litigation petition filed by Civil Liberties Committee president Gaddam Lakshman seeking a CBI probe into the recent police atrocities and torture of Dalits in Nerella village.

Telangana Additional Advocate General J Ramchander Rao submitted to the bench in a sealed cover a report by Warangal MGM Hospital doctors who treated the victims on the orders of the High Court during the previous hearing.

The bench directed the Jail Superintendent to furnish a report on the injuries of the victims at the time of their remand. It also sought a report from Karimnagar Civil Hospital where the victims were first treated.

The bench sought details of the incident from the AAG, who informed the Court that after an accident involving a sand lorry in the village that resulted in a death of a villager, the mob attacked the police and in trying to disperse them these incidents happened. For this an SI of police had been suspended. He alleged that there is a political angle behind the agitation and the court is being used as a platform for this.

The counsel for the petitioner V Raghunath, in his arguments, said the AAG was distorting the matter and he cited how the report from Karimnagar Civil Hospital was shown as though the victims were admitted for fever. The bench observed that all aspects of the case would be dealt by the court after receiving the reports. The case was adjourned to August 30.
