Boxer Lovlina Borgohain took a giant leap towards securing the gold in the Asian Games' 75kg weight class on Friday, while celebrating her 29th birthday with her triumph.

Lovlina finally secured a victory to grab the gold in women's boxing at the Asian Games for the first time since 2014 when Mary Kom won the gold medal in Indian boxing to claim the women's first gold of the country in the tournament for Indian.

Lovlina also earned her second straight Asian Games final. She had previously already won a silver medal in the previous Olympic Games in Hangzhou, and she was aiming to do a better job than that.

Lovlina Controls Final Against Ziyi Bao

Lovlina started the finals aggressively, taking advantage of her size and height to make a good first impression on Bao. The Chinese boxer, who had a 14-fight winning streak going into the fight, slowly warmed up and hit her opponent several times with body shots.

Lovlina had an opportunity to stand up to Bao and emerged victorious in the first round on the judges' score sheet, 3-2.

Bao was more aggressive in the second round, and started to make his way to the target and attempt to get closer. Lovlina came to the rescue with jabs and hooks, and kept her reach intact.

Her acting ability was once again acknowledged by the judges in the second round which was awarded 4-1 to her.

With a lead secured, Lovlina adopted a more defensive approach in the final round. Bao attempted to increase the pressure with stronger punches, but Lovlina successfully maintained control until the final bell.

The unanimous decision confirmed Lovlina as the Asian Games champion, prompting celebrations among the Indian contingent.

From Hangzhou Silver to Asian Games Gold

Lovlina arrived at the Asian Games after a period of reflection following her silver-medal finish at the previous Games.

She had also endured a setback against Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree in the Commonwealth Games final. Rather than dwelling on the defeat, Lovlina focused on identifying areas of her game that needed improvement.

Ahead of the Asian Games, she had said that she had studied her performance and wanted to become a more complete and consistent boxer.

That approach paid off as she delivered a composed performance in the final and secured the gold medal.

Lovlina Ends 12-Year Wait

With her victory, Lovlina became the first Indian woman since Mary Kom in 2014 to win an Asian Games boxing gold medal.

The triumph also completed Lovlina’s journey from a silver medal at the previous Asian Games to the top of the podium in the 75kg category.

Her gold on her 29th birthday added another significant milestone to her international boxing career.

Always love to raise the unraised matter. In a world of worries, I am always ready to come over my comfort zone and taking the step ahead of spreading awareness.
