Rajputana Royals rout Chero Archers 6-0 for 2nd win in row
Hyderabad: Defending champions Rajputana Royals continued their resurgence with a commanding 6-0 victory over Chero Archers in the Archery Premier League (APL) Season 2 here on Tuesday, securing their second consecutive win without dropping a set.
After suffering three successive defeats, the Royals bounced back on Monday and maintained their winning momentum with an impressive performance against the high-flying Chero Archers. The victory took both teams to six points, keeping them firmly in contention for the semifinals.
Compound world No. 1 Ella Gibson was the standout performer for the Royals, delivering a flawless 60 out of 60 points by hitting the 10-ring with every arrow.
Chero, who preferred American recurve archer Casey Kaufhold over Kumkum Mohod, lost the opening set 73-74 after Kaufhold began with a costly seven. The Royals edged the second set 76-75, capitalising on a couple of nines from Chero’s compound archers.
The third set ended in a 58-58 tie after six arrows each. Chero’s Atanu Das, otherwise in fine form, struck a rare eight, while Sangeeta, making her first appearance in place of Ankita Bhakat, responded with a crucial 10. Needing an eight to seal victory, Tokyo Olympic champion Mete Gazoz delivered a nine and celebrated enthusiastically with his teammates.
“We didn’t start well over the first four days. I guess everybody misses us because I think the APL needs more energy and more dancing and now we’re giving that,” Gazoz quipped after the win.
Initiated by the Archery Association of India, the world’s first franchise-based archery league features six teams and 48 archers, including 36 Indians and 12 international stars. Hosted at People’s Plaza, Hyderabad, the tournament concludes on October 18, with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals and final.
Wednesday’s fixtures feature Chero Archers against Prithviraaj Yodhas, Kakatiya Knights versus Rajputana Royals, and Chola Chiefs against Mighty Marathas.
