Apple may not be ready to give up on its Vision Pro dream just yet. The company is reportedly working on a completely redesigned Vision Pro-style headset, while simultaneously focusing much of its attention on smart glasses. The new device, currently being developed under the codename N224, is in an early stage and could look very different from the current model.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is exploring about four different designs for the new headset. One of them could take an approach similar to Meta's future virtual reality glasses, moving some of the processing hardware and the battery outside the headset itself. Gurman notes that Apple is looking for ways to make the device "cheaper and lighter," although the project remains uncertain and could still be cancelled.
Apple wants to solve the Vision Pro's biggest problem
The Vision Pro went on sale in February 2024 to great fanfare, but its high price and heavy design have hindered its adoption as a mass-market product. Apple has reportedly explored various ways to address this issue over the past few years, even cancelling or shelving several projects.
Now, the company appears to be trying again. Apple is said to be experimenting with different materials and designs to reduce the headset's weight. It is also considering the use of an external processing unit that would house the processor and the battery. This idea would allow the headset to be lighter, although some reports suggest that certain senior executives believe using an external device would make the experience less comfortable.
The current Vision Pro can weigh around 800 grams, depending on the head strap, and its starting price in the United States is $3,499 (approximately 335,962 rupees). That combination has made comfort and affordability two of the biggest challenges for Apple's ambitions in the realm of spatial computing.
For now, smart glasses represent Apple's most significant bet.
Interestingly, the new headset is not Apple's top priority at the moment. The company is reportedly focusing more on smart glasses, with a launch planned for late 2027. This would put Apple in direct competition with Meta's growing lineup of Ray-Ban smart glasses.
Apple is also said to be exploring other wearable devices, including AirPods with cameras and a screenless smart wristband.
As for the next Vision headset, patience may be required. If project N224 clears Apple's internal reviews, Gurman states that it is unlikely to arrive before late 2028 or early 2029.
For the time being, Apple seems to be trying to solve one key issue: how to ensure the Vision Pro isn't perceived merely as a heavy computer strapped to one's face, but rather as something people genuinely want to use on a daily basis.
