Claude is helping users work with Google Workspace files without needing to switch between apps all the time. Anthropic has begun releasing a Google Workspace add-on that brings Claude directly into Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides. The feature is now available in beta, for people using any paid Claude plans.

The add‑on shows up as a sidebar, inside Google Workspace files. From that sidebar users can ask Claude to read, analyse or edit the file that the user is working on. Claude can also work with text, spreadsheet cells or slides that the user specifically selects.

Claude Can Edit Google Docs

In Google Docs, Claude can make changes directly to existing documents while maintaining their formatting. Users can ask it to correct sentences, update headings or rewrite sections. For more extensive changes, Claude presents suggested edits in the sidebar, explaining what will be changed before users approve or reject them.

For example, someone preparing a product requirements document could ask Claude to rewrite the executive summary and turn the next steps into a table. The work can then be completed inside the same document.

More Tools for Google Sheets

Claude also adds several capabilities to Google Sheets. It can generate formulas, create pivot tables, build native charts and add new spreadsheet tabs. When users need to combine or clean data, Claude can send a selected range to Python for processing before returning the results to the sheet.

It can also build reports from source files. A user could provide data and ask Claude to prepare a Q3 budget versus actual report, with separate tabs for teams, a summary chart and highlights of figures that exceed the budget.

Slides Get AI Assistance Too

Google Slides receives similar support. Claude can create slides using the presentation’s existing layouts and themes. After making changes, it can also check the deck for problems such as overlapping elements, text running outside slide boundaries or content that may be difficult to read.

Users can control how Claude applies edits. The default “Ask before edits" setting requires approval before changes are made. Each proposed change appears as an approval card with a summary. An “Accept all edits" option is also available for users who want Claude to complete a task without repeated approvals.

Claude’s existing connectors and skills can also be used through the Workspace add-on, allowing information from connected services to be combined with Google files.

Anthropic has additionally introduced beta connectors for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides within Claude itself. Users can share a Google file link or ask Claude to create a new file from a conversation, using existing Google sharing permissions.

The Workspace add-on can be installed through the Google Workspace Marketplace. After opening a Google file, users can select Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. Administrators can also deploy it across an organisation or to selected groups through the Google Admin console.
