Elon Musk Says Space Data Centres Look ‘Appealing’ After US Polls
Elon Musk has again brought up the topic of artificial intelligence infrastructure. He said that building data centres in space might become more appealing in the future. His remarks came hours after the 2026 US midterm election results started showing strong gains, for the Democrats.
The billionaire entrepreneur, who openly supported Republican candidates during the election campaign and reportedly spent more than $150 million in Texas alone, shared two posts on X (formerly Twitter) early Wednesday, November 4.
“Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now,” Musk wrote in his first post, seemingly referring to the changing political situation and growing opposition to large-scale data centre projects.
He followed it up with another post, saying, “Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time 🤷♂️,” making a sarcastic reference to his political involvement and the election outcome.
Democrats make gains in Texas
Musk's remarks came amid a notable political shift, with Democrats recording important victories across the country. One of the major developments was Democrat Gina Hinojosa's surprise victory in the Texas governor's race. Hinojosa has previously opposed the expansion of data centres.
The result could attract attention from technology companies and investors involved in large-scale computing infrastructure projects across the state.
Musk and his businesses, including Tesla, SpaceX and xAI, have established a significant presence in Texas, with investments spanning high-performance computing (HPC), chip manufacturing and data centre-related infrastructure.
Although Musk did not directly mention Google, Amazon, Meta or other technology giants, his comments come at a time when these companies are spending heavily on expanding data centres to support their artificial intelligence ambitions.
Why data centres are becoming a political issue
The fast rise of AI has led to a need, for computer power making tech companies build bigger and bigger data centers. These places are also getting criticized because they use a lot of electricity put stress on local energy systems and harm the environment.
The cost of energy is going up. People are worried, about how much resources it takes to run these places. These issues are becoming more and more talked about in politics. Musk’s newest comments seem to show that companies might have to change how they plan their buildings and systems as rules and political problems get tougher.
2026 US midterm elections witness historic firsts
Beyond the fight, between Democrats and Democrats and Republicans the 2026 US midterm elections have also recorded several historic achievements.
Voters chose the Black woman governor of the country the first Native American woman governor, the first Native American woman senator and the first openly gay male senator.
The elections were also a moment for women getting involved in politics. According to Rutgers University's Center for American Women and Politics 300 women ran for positions, in the US House and Senate.
These developments make the 2026 midterm elections particularly notable, with their results potentially influencing both the country's political direction and the future of major technology investments.
