Sam Altman says AI is for everyone; ChatGPT Luna will offer unlimited access to free users
In Short
OpenAI is launching GPT-5.6 Luna for Free and Go users, alongside a new "Think" button for more complex questions. Below are the details regarding changes for ChatGPT users and when the new features will arrive.

ChatGPT
OpenAI is rolling out a major change to ChatGPT that could make its AI tools more accessible to free users. The company has announced that ChatGPT Free users will soon have access to unlimited text chats powered by the new GPT-5.6 Luna model. This update is part of OpenAI's broader initiative to put its latest AI models within reach of more people.
GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5. With this new model, OpenAI is bringing back the "Think" button, which will allow ChatGPT to spend more time processing questions that require deeper reasoning. In a post on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote: "5.6 Luna works much better in chat now, and there will be unlimited text chat for free users!"
Changes for ChatGPT users
Although GPT-5.6 comes with unlimited text chats, OpenAI has clarified that specific limits will still apply to features such as file uploads, image generation, and other tools.
As for the "Think" button, it is designed to handle more complex questions. For example, users can use standard mode for simple questions and activate the "Think" feature when they need help with research, calculations, planning, or problems requiring a higher level of reasoning.
OpenAI states that the new GPT-5.6 Luna is also more reliable regarding data accuracy. In an internal evaluation covering financial, medical, and legal topics, the company found that responses containing at least one factual error dropped by 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant.
OpenAI is also updating GPT-5.6 Sol for Plus and Pro users. The company states that the model will provide more focused responses, use a more concise format, and better adjust the level of detail based on the question. These users will also have access to a new reasoning slider, allowing them to decide how much reasoning effort ChatGPT should apply.
When will these changes arrive?
OpenAI states that the updated GPT-5.6 Sol version is already available to Plus and Pro plan users. GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for Free and Go users this week, while unlimited text chat and the new "Think" button are expected to arrive next week.
The company notes that ChatGPT now has over a billion weekly users. With this update, OpenAI essentially aims to make advanced AI less dependent on a paid subscription, at least for standard text-based conversations.
