Amazon has begun another round of job cuts affecting workers in India, the United States and the United Kingdom. The latest reductions have impacted teams, across parts of Amazon’s retail operations including customer service, seller partner services and marketplace support.

A famous publication report says that, than 1,000 corporate employees have been affected worldwide. Amazon has confirmed the round of workforce reductions but said it only involved a "small number" of roles. The company said most of the changes were made within its "Stores" division, which handles its main e-commerce operations.

The timing of the layoffs is particularly notable in India. The job cuts came as Amazon’s Great Indian Festival sale got underway. Employees reportedly began sharing information about the layoffs through internal communication channels, including Slack.

Why is Amazon cutting jobs again?

The latest cuts are spread across several teams rather than being focused on one particular department. Employees working in customer service, seller partner services and marketplace support have reportedly been affected. Some engineering jobs linked to Amazon’s retail operations have also been cut.

These layoffs follow a much bigger restructuring at Amazon. The company eliminated around 30,000 corporate positions between late 2025 and January 2026 as it worked to reduce costs and simplify its organisation.

The latest cuts are much smaller, but they show that Amazon’s restructuring is continuing. The company is also putting more money into artificial intelligence while preparing large investments in data centres, chips and other infrastructure needed for its AI plans. Amazon plans to invest approximately $220 billion in these areas.

Amazon is still expanding in India

The job cuts do not mean Amazon is stepping away from India. The company continues to invest in its operations here.

In March Amazon opened a campus in Bengaluru. Amazon described this campus as Amazon's largest office in Asia. The campus covers 1.1 million feet. Amazon expects that, than 7,000 employees will work here. Those employees will be involved in e-commerce payments, technology and seller services.

The newest cuts in staff seem to be part of a change in Amazon's team, with the company trying to figure out where it needs workers and money the most.
