Declare September 17 as official Liberation Day: Vikas Rao

Rajanna Sircilla: State BJP spokesperson and Vemulawada Assembly constituency in-charge Chennamaneni Vikas Rao has demanded that the Telangana government officially observe September 17 as ‘Liberation Day’, describing it as a symbol of the sacrifices and valour of the people of Telangana.

Addressing a press conference in Vemulawada on Wednesday, Rao said Hyderabad State was integrated with India on September 17, 1948, following Operation Polo led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He recalled the hardships faced by people during the Nizam’s rule and Razakar violence. Rao said the BJP had been demanding official recognition of the day since 1998. He sought a museum in Hyderabad, memorials at Bairanpally and Parakala, and inclusion of the liberation movement in school textbooks. He said the BJP would organise grand celebrations if voted to power.
