Eid al-Azha (Bakrid), the festival of sacrifice, was celebrated with religious fervour and traditional enthusiasm across Hyderabad and rest of Telangana on Monday.

Attired in their best, Muslims offered special prayers at the Idgahs and mosques and exchanged greetings.

City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar visited various places in the Old City and supervised arrangements. Police made elaborate security arrangements, especially in the Old City to prevent any untoward incident and also to prevent illegal transportation of cattle.

In Hyderabad, thousands of Muslims offered prayers at Mir Alam Idgah, Mecca Masjid near Charminar, Madannapet, Chaderghat, Masab Tank, Secunderabad and other places.

The biggest congregation in Hyderabad was held at the historic Mir Alam Idgah, where thousands of people offered prayers.

The historic Mecca Masjid, Madannapet Idgah, Hockey Ground at Masab Tank and Military Ground Mehdipatnam also witnessed big congregations.

Prayers were also held at hundreds of mosques in the city.

Festive atmosphere was seen in rest of Telangana, including Nizamabad, Bodhan, Warangal, Kazipet, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Adilabad, Nirmal, Bhainsa, Zaheerabad, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Nalgonda, Tandur, Vikarabad and other places that have a sizable Muslim population.

Imams and other religious heads exhorted Muslims to imbibe the spirit of sacrifice and follow Prophet Ibrahim, who offered to sacrifice his son Prophet Ismail to please Allah.
