Drive to make helmets mandatory launched

An innovative helmet awareness initiative called ‘Siroraksha – Pranaraksha’ (Protect the Head - Protect the Life begins
Bapatla: In a bid to curb road accident fatalities, Bapatla District Superintendent of Police B Umamaheswar launched an innovative helmet awareness initiative called ‘Siroraksha – Pranaraksha’ (Protect the Head - Protect the Life), leading a rally of 150 police personnel on two-wheelers from the district police headquarters to the Ambedkar statue in Bapatla on Wednesday.
The SP announced that awareness programmes would be conducted across the district from April 1 to 15, giving residents and government employees adequate time to procure helmets and obtain valid driving licenses. Strict enforcement would commence from April 16, initially covering police stations in Bapatla mandal on a pilot basis. The SP also announced an impending ‘No Helmet - No Fuel’ programme, under which petrol bunks would be directed to refuse fuel to two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets.
Noting that road accident deaths outnumber fatalities from most other causes, and that head injuries are the primary killer in two-wheeler crashes, the SP urged government and outsourcing employees to set an example by compulsorily wearing helmets while commuting to duty.
District Transport Officer TK Paramdhama Reddy, DSP P Jagadish Nayak, and other senior officials participated in the rally.
