CM Chandrababu reviews on floods, announces 50kg rice to fishing families

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu held a teleconference today (Saturday) regarding the heavy rains across the state and the flood situation in North Andhra. He reviewed the situation—including the inundation of residential areas and submerged crops in several districts—with senior officials, including Chief Secretary Sai Prasad. Officials briefed the Chief Minister on the relief measures being undertaken in the affected areas. He issued orders to provide 50 kg of rice free of cost to fishing families who have been unable to venture out to sea for the past five days.

Minister Atchannaidu brought the river flow and flood situation in North Andhra to the Chief Minister's attention. Irrigation officials explained the water inflows into reservoirs across the respective districts. The Chief Minister directed that the process of providing electricity connectivity to the Hiramandalam Lift Project be expedited. He instructed senior officials from the Irrigation and Electricity departments to take immediate action to complete this process. He further directed that the lift project works be finished so that Vamsadhara river water could be diverted into the Hiramandalam reservoir.

The Chief Minister also discussed with officials the measures taken to fill reservoirs in various districts. Officials informed him that while there were no upstream inflows into the Krishna River, water levels at the Prakasam Barrage had risen due to local floodwaters. The Chief Minister stated that constructing a barrage between the Pulichintala project (downstream) and the Prakasam Barrage (upstream) is necessary to fully store these local floodwaters. It was suggested that earlier proposals to construct two barrages—one upstream and one downstream of the Prakasam Barrage—be taken forward. The Chief Minister directed that proposals regarding the construction of these two projects be submitted to the Centre. Officials explained that recent rains have reduced the rainfall deficit from 50 percent to 31 percent. They noted a deficit of 19.80 percent in Coastal Andhra and 42 percent in Rayalaseema. Officials informed Chief Minister Chandrababu that while rainfall has subsided significantly, inflows into the rivers from upstream areas in North Andhra are continuing.
