Tamil cinema has been working hard to hit the prestigious Rs.1000 crore global box office. But despite having some of the biggest and most celebrated stars, Rajinikanth, Vijay, Kamal Haasan, Ajith Kumar, Dhanush and others, none of Tamil cinema’s biggest hits have hit this number.

A few big hits have come close to hitting half a billion. Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar’s 2.0 has grossed around Rs.665 crore worldwide. Vijay’s Leo, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj has grossed around Rs.623 crore worldwide. And Rajinikanth’s Jailer has also done incredibly well, grossing around Rs.607 crore worldwide.

Another huge star film from Rajinikanth, Coolie was also not able to meet expectations of hitting 1000 crore. It has grossed around Rs.503.5 crore worldwide, according to trade sites.

Now Jailer 2 has a lot of expectations with Rajinikanth’s star power, the popularity of the franchise and Anirudh Ravichander’s music. Even if it hits Rs.700-750 crore worldwide it will still fall short of hitting the mark.

Big directors like Shankar, Atlee, Mani Ratnam, AR Murugadoss and Nelson Dilipkumar have all given us some incredible movies, but this benchmark still seems just out of reach for Tamil cinema.

As Vijay has been moving into politics, there are big expectations for Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan’s multi starrer. If they manage to hit the landmark figure it will be a huge moment for Kollywood.

For now, Tamil cinema still have their dream of hitting 1000 crore. We’ll have to wait and see who will make history.
