Model UN 2026 offers students a platform to engage with global issues: Avinash Kolla

With the aim of fostering awareness of global issues, policy formulation and social engagement among school students, DRS International School (DRSIS) organised “Model United Nations (MUN) 2026” at its campus in Gundlapochampally on Friday.

Renowned art director Avinash Kolla, who inaugurated the event, said Model United Nations provides students with a transformative experience by helping them develop leadership qualities, global awareness and essential life skills. He said the MUN platform encourages students to see themselves as part of the global community and develop an understanding of diverse cultures, empathy and a sense of responsibility. Such experiences, he added, inspire students to engage with issues that matter to them and recognise their potential to contribute to change at both local and global levels. Monish Pattipati, Director of the United Diplomatic Council and guest of honour, described MUN as a journey of personal and intellectual growth.

He said participation enables students to advocate for their views, defend their ideas and develop critical thinking while gaining a broader understanding of global affairs. DRSIS Director Dr. Anjani Kumar Agarwal said Model UN can provide valuable exposure, mentorship and connections for students interested in international relations, political science and law.

He noted that many students have drawn inspiration from their MUN experiences and later pursued careers in diplomacy, government, law and the non-profit sector. DRSIS Principal I. Venugopal said the school conducts the Model UN annually to actively engage students and deepen their understanding of the principles and functioning of the United Nations. This year, around 300 students from nearly 15 schools across Hyderabad are participating in the programme.

The event brought together students from different city schools, providing them with an opportunity to deliberate on global issues, formulate policy responses and participate in discussions aimed at developing informed and socially engaged young citizens.
