Children's Screen Time: A Growing Concern for Mental Health among children
The United Nations has raised alarm over the growing addiction of children to mobile phones and the damage it is doing to their mental and physical health. According to some researches, that two-thirds of people are now addicted to screens which is prompting mental health problems due to increased use of electronics.
Decades ago, children would play among themselves and this helped them get some form of an exercise. However, with the introduction of modern technology like smartphones, the internet and tablets, they spend almost all their free time indoors interacting with devices instead of each other.
Such obsession of youngsters with electronics is creating a negative impact on the psychological state of the younger generation. There is a higher level of anxiety and depression in children because of spending more time on electronic devices. They are much more occupied with their mobile phone and social networks rather than studying or playing with friends and family members. Furthermore, youngsters lose sleep because of being concerned about how their peers might see them in social networks. Thus, there is a high incidence of problems related to mental health, including anxiety, depression, and low self-confidence among adolescents.
The World Health Organization warns of growing prevalence of technology usage among kids and its negative impact on their social life and mental health.
Specialists warn about the risks of spending too much time watching the screen and call upon parents to be more responsible and make sure that their children spend less time in front of these gadgets and get some physical exercise.
WHO calls for the resolution of this health crisis caused by improper use of technologies.
Parents and teachers need to make sure that the young generation gets used to proper screen-time usage and spends more time interacting with
Since artificial intelligence and technological developments have enabled people to connect with each other virtually, people should be careful with the amount of time they spend on these devices.
Authorities should sensitize the public on how the use of technology could affect their health and mental well-being.
