Vishwakarma Jayanti Celebrated as Festival of Artisans and Architects

The most significant festival of Hinduism named as Vishwakarma Jayanti is being held throughout the country to commemorate the birth day of Lord Vishwakarma, who is regarded as the architect of gods who designed the palaces, chariots, and weapons of the deities. Celebrated on the day of Kanya Sankranti that will be held on 17 September this year, Vishwakarma Jayanti is held on the birthday of Lord Vishwakarma, who is believed to be the son of Lord Brahma, one of the Trinity of Hinduism, and the creator of the city of Dwarka for Lord Krishna.

As per Hinduism, Lord Vishwakarma is worshipped as the Creator in the Vedas including Rigveda and Krishna Yajurveda. He is also mentioned in the Atharvaveda as the provider of sustenance. The Vishwakarma is also revered in the Purusha Sukta as the Virata Purusha or Cosmic Being. In all the Vedas, he is represented as having a thousand arms, eyes, faces, and feet. He is the divine carpenter and architect of the gods, and hence is one of the most important deities for artisans and engineers.

Thus, Vishwakarma Jayanti has immense significance among those involved in the field of Vastu Shastra (Architecture) and Mechanical Engineering. On this day, the people in these professions perform puja for Lord Vishwakarma seeking his blessings for good health of their families and success in their professional life. Furthermore, it is also a day to worship tools and machinery. This is not a day when people operate the machinery. Instead, they keep them aside and worship Lord Vishwakarma. The craftsmen pray to Lord Vishwakarma for their good health, prosperity, security, and success in all their endeavors. All the rituals take place very sincerely in the temple, factory, and office. The offices and places of work are decorated with flowers and the idol of Lord Vishwakarma riding an elephant is worshipped.

Some special pujas and rituals are done and the devotees offer Prasad (Sacred food). Once all these pujas are over, then the people close their offices and indulge in charitable activities like Annadanam (Feeding the Poor). This old festival tradition passes from generation to generation and it is our responsibility to ensure its continuation.
