Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh has strengthened its healthcare preparedness to ensure uninterrupted medical services during Cyclone Arnab, with 8,441 emergency beds, 1,050 medical teams and 2,259 ambulances linked to the Real Time Governance System (RTGS), health minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav announced on Tuesday.

Reviewing preparedness through a virtual meeting with senior officials, the minister said leave for doctors and paramedical staff had been cancelled to ensure the availability of adequate personnel. Additional fuel had also been stocked to operate generators in case of power disruptions.

Special attention was being given to 96 vulnerable mandals across 20 districts, covering 1,176 government hospitals. Medical services had also been arranged at 38 relief camps, while officials were instructed to coordinate with the Revenue, Panchayat Raj and other departments.

Of the 2,259 ambulances connected to RTGS, 1,892 comprise 108 emergency, 104 mobile medical and 102 mother-and-child services vehicles. Another 367 private ambulances have been linked to facilitate rapid deployment according to requirements.

The department has stocked essential antibiotics and medicines to prevent infectious diseases, besides preparing 26,500 anti-snake venom injections. Authorities have also arranged for the transfer of 2,838 pregnant women nearing their delivery dates to nearby government hospitals. Following weather alerts for Wednesday, medical officers and staff in 255 mandals across 20 districts, from Srikakulam to Bapatla, were placed on heightened alert. Urban health centres in Visakhapatnam and other locations have been instructed to provide round-the-clock services. Health secretary G Veerapandian and senior departmental officials informed the minister that medical officers were working round the clock at the RTGS command and control centre.

Satya Kumar said public health protection remained the government’s priority and directed officials to intensify monitoring and ensure prompt medical assistance to all affected people.
