Govt reinstates suspended IPS officers

Amaravati: The state government has revoked the suspension of IPS officers Vishal Gunni and Kanthi Rana Tata and reinstated them into service with immediate effect, while clarifying that the ongoing disciplinary and criminal proceedings against them will continue.

The government issued separate orders under the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969, revoking the suspension of Vishal Gunni and Kanthi Rana Tata.

Both officers were suspended in 2024 in connection with the Mumbai based model Kadambari Jethwani case, and their suspensions had been periodically reviewed and extended. The latest extension was valid until September 4, 2026.

The decision followed representations submitted by the two officers to the government on August 24 seeking revocation of their suspension. Based on the circumstances reported by director general of police Harish Kumar Gupta, the government decided to reinstate them.

The orders, however, make it clear that the reinstatement is without prejudice to the ongoing disciplinary and criminal proceedings. The action against the officers stems from allegations relating to the arrest and alleged illegal detention of film actress Kadambari Jethwani. The case originated from a complaint lodged by YSRCP leader Kukkala Vidyasagar on February 2, 2024, following which the Ibrahimpatnam police registered FIR. Jethwani was subsequently arrested in Mumbai on February 3.

After the NDA government led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu assumed office, Jethwani lodged a complaint alleging illegal detention by police personnel. Based on her complaint, the Ibrahimpatnam police registered FIR in October 2024, leading to action against several police officers. The CID investigation into the allegations is continuing, and a charge sheet is yet to be filed.
