CMC launches drive to turn coconut waste into wealth
Hyderabad: What is usually discarded as waste after consuming tender coconut could soon become a valuable resource. Tender coconut shells have the potential to be converted into several valuable products, including coir fibre, cocopeat, organic manure and other eco-friendly materials.
In a major step towards sustainable waste maanagement, the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) has launched a special Tender Coconut Waste Management Programme to convert discarded coconut shells into useful products through scientific collection and recycling.
With this initiative, the corporation aims to connect local tender coconut vendors with authorised waste collection agencies and coconut processing industries, ensuring that the waste does not end up in landfills.
As part of the first phase, municipal sanitation teams will identify and register tender coconut vendors across different wards. Details such as vendor information, GPS locations, photographs and estimated daily waste generation will be recorded. A separate team will verify the collected information to ensure accuracy.
In the second phase, processing industries capable of utilising tender coconut waste as raw material will be identified. Their processing capacities, raw material requirements, products and commercial terms will be assessed before finalising partnerships.
The corporation also plans to appoint dedicated logistics service providers for waste collection, preferably using specially branded electric vehicles. Collection routes will be scientifically designed based on vendor locations, waste quantities and processing facility locations.
To ensure transparency, drivers will record the quantity of waste collected from each vendor through a mobile application. An OTP-based verification system will confirm the collection details. Processing units will also record the quantity of waste received, supported by photographic evidence. The entire process, from vendor registration and waste collection to transportation and final delivery, will be digitally monitored through dedicated dashboards.
The corporation has emphasised that tender coconut waste must be collected separately without mixing it with other municipal waste. Vendors have been instructed to segregate the waste and hand it over only to authorised collection personnel. Through this initiative, Cyberabad aims to reduce landfill waste, improve urban sanitation, encourage recycling industries and create new business opportunities for local enterprises.
By turning discarded coconut shells into useful raw materials, Cyberabad is taking a significant step towards transforming waste into wealth and promoting a circular economy.
