Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed officials to undertake the restoration of the Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages, which are part of the Kaleshwaram project, strictly in accordance with the recommendations of Central government agencies and dam safety experts. He said the works should commence in December and final clearances for the restoration should be obtained by the end of November.
At a review meeting with ministers and Irrigation Department officials, the Chief Minister discussed the measures being taken to rehabilitate the three damaged barrages and bring them back into operation.
The Chief Minister instructed ministers to counter what he described as false propaganda that water available at Medigadda was not being lifted. Irrigation Department engineers clarified that, given the present conditions, lifting water from the barrages was technically unfeasible.
Through a PowerPoint presentation, officials explained that for water lifted from Medigadda to reach Yellampalli, the gates of the Annaram and Sundilla barrages would have to be closed. However, the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) had already warned that the gates of Annaram and Sundilla, which suffer from structural defects, must be kept open.
Officials informed the Chief Minister that restoration proposals for the three barrages had been prepared at an estimated cost of approximately Rs 4,193 crore. It was proposed that construction firms bear the cost of repairs related to structural defects, while the government would meet the expenses of any additional works.
