Desist from cultivation in Rabi: CM Revanth Reddy to farmers
Hyderabad: Amid intensified El Nino weather conditions, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has declared that the state government would take a slew of measures to overcome the impending irrigation, farming, and drinking water crises over the next nine months in the Telangana state.
In view of the onset of severe irrigation crisis due to depletion of water levels in all reservoirs in the Krishna and Godavari basins, the Chief Minister has appealed to the entire farming community to desist from cultivation of crops in the upcoming Rabi (Yasangi) season. The Chief Minister said that the Cabinet Sub-committee will hold a meeting and ascertain the losses; thereafter, an action plan will be prepared soon to provide relief to the distressed farmers. The Chief Minister warned that farmers would face big difficulties if they still go for farming of paddy and other water-intensive crops in the next farming season.
Acknowledging the farmers’ invaluable contribution to the country in providing food security since Independence, Revanth Reddy said that the available water resources in the reservoirs were not more than 200 TMC of water as against 460 TMC last year. Water storage in the Krishna basin was 72 per cent less and in the Godavari basin, it was 44 per cent less this year.
