GHMC green toilets stink of official neglect

Khairatabad: Green toilets in Khairatabad are running in worst condition as days pass by. According to sources, the annual cost for maintenance is around 8 to 10 lakh per zone, and as per the contract, toilets have to be cleaned three times a day. It is known that the contractors are not organising cleanup three times a day. It is even lacking in basic amenities, such as taps, exhaust fans and lights.

"Actually, they should be cleaned three times a day, but due to water scarcity in summer, it is not being done by the contractors. They should regularly check the maintenance regarding doors, exhaust fans and lights etc., but they fail to do so," says Dr Bhargava, assistant medical health officer at GHMC."I felt very happy after the installation of these green toilets, as I have a Pan Shop near to it, but later on, they became the worst places for nature's calls. Now, I attend my nature's call in an open place again," says Krishna, a Pan Shop owner.

"Before the installation of these bio toilets, there was no disturbance in this place. But now, a lot of stench is emitted from them. Proper cleaning is not done by the contractors. The GHMC workers come and chuck some bleaching around it. It is the only maintenance done regularly, says Bhaskar, a soda cart owner.

"Recently, I went to use them, but the situation there was horrible. People will surely fall sick if they use these toilets. The officials should respond fast and take an action on the people responsible," says Narayana Rao, a computer mechanic.
