The Telangana High Court has directed the authorities concerned to reconsider the candidature of Vijaya Deepika Gangapatnam for participation in the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games. The direction has come after she approached the court challenging her exclusion from the selection list for para table tennis.
A single judge bench comprising Justice B Vijaysen Reddy, heard the apple in W.P. No. 29214 of 2026, and passed an interim direction requiring the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and the Paralympic Committee of India to reconsider the petitioner’s case for inclusion in the Indian contingent.
In her petition, she had contended that her name was not included in the selection list despite her claim that she fulfilled the prescribed eligibility and selection criteria. She sought directions to the authorities to consider her candidature for the Asian Para Games, scheduled to be held from October 18 to 24, 2026.
The petition had come up for hearing before the state high court making the Union of India, the Table Tennis Federation of India/Ad hoc Committee, the Paralympic Committee of India and the Sports Authority of India as the parties. The petitioner alleged that her exclusion was illegal and arbitrary and was contrary to the applicable para table tennis selection criteria and other relevant sports regulations.
During the hearing, senior counsel V Raghunath appeared for the petitioner, assisted by advocate Yeddu Divakar, while T Sanjay Reddy, Standing Counsel for the Central Government, appeared for the Union of India and Sports Authority of India.
The High Court permitted the petitioner to take out personal notice to the TTFI and Paralympic Committee through email or WhatsApp correspondence. Importantly, the court directed respondents 2 and 3 “to reconsider the petitioner’s case for inclusion and forward her name through the special proposal/wildcard/bipartite route, if found appropriate, for participation in the Games.”
The court further directed that the reconsideration be undertaken within one week from the date of receipt of a copy of the order, after providing the petitioner an opportunity of personal hearing.
The matter has been posted for September 15, 2026.
The court’s order does not finally adjudicate the petitioner’s eligibility or direct her immediate selection for the Asian Para Games; rather, it asked the concerned authorities to reconsider her candidature in accordance with the directions issued by the court.
