Congress, BRS indulge in diversion tactic to side step public issues
Khammam: CPM central committee member and former MP Tammineni Veerabhadram on Monday criticised the use of abusive and unparliamentary language by the ruling and opposition leaders in Telangana, saying it was lowering the standards of political discourse in the state.
Speaking at a ‘Meet the Press’ programme organised by the Telangana Union of Working Journalists (TUWJ-IJ) in Khammam, Tammineni said political leaders should use dignified language while criticising their opponents.
He alleged that the Congress and BRS were engaged in a continuing war of allegations over land encroachments and alleged illegal accumulation of wealth only to divert public attention from pressing issues.
“Both parties are leveling allegations against each other but taking no effective actions,” he said.
Tammineni questioned why the ruling party is hesitant to take action on alleged land irregularities when it is in power. The people, he said, were aware of the political understanding behind the exchange of allegations.
He alleged that the Congress government had failed to fulfill its promises and that the BRS, despite criticising the government, has not announced any concrete course of action.
Expressing concern over the functioning of democracy in the country, Tammineni said the role of ordinary people in the democratic process was gradually diminishing. He alleged that electoral malpractices had evolved from rigging and vote-buying to the alleged purchase of elected representatives.
