Khammam: Former minister and BRS leader Puvvada Ajay Kumar on Wednesday alleged that demolition and destruction has become the main agenda of the Congress government in Telangana.

He expressed solidarity with residents of Srinivas Nagar in Khammam city who were protesting against the proposed demolition of their houses.

Puvvada said the government should stop measures that affect the homes and livelihoods of poor families.

The former minister alleged that since the Congress government came to power, more houses belonging to poor people had been demolished for various reasons than new houses constructed for them. He said the government should focus on development and providing housing to the poor instead of undertaking demolition drives. Puvvada urged the government to immediately reconsider the proposed demolitions and demanded that Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao withdraw the move concerning the houses of the affected residents.

Recalling his tenure as a minister, Puvvada said several poor families in Khammam city had been provided house-site pattas and steps were taken to facilitate housing for economically weaker sections.

He alleged that providing houses and house-site pattas to the poor had been a focus during his tenure, while the demolition of houses had now become a matter of concern for affected families.

Puvvada appealed to the authorities to consider the problems of the residents and ensure that families were not left without shelter or livelihood opportunities. House demolitions involving poor families have also been a subject of political controversy in Khammam this year. In February, BRS leaders, including Puvvada, criticised the demolition of houses of families on Bhoodan lands at Velugumatla and sought relief for the affected residents.
