Kurnool: The International Day of Older Persons was celebrated with enthusiasm at an old age home under the aegis of Mera Yuva Bharat, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, on Thursday.

District Welfare Officer for Senior Citizens Race Fatima, District Youth Officer T Aijaiah and junior college lecturer Santoshi attended the programme as chief guests.

Students and youth volunteers participated in various activities aimed at promoting respect for senior citizens and highlighting the importance of love, care and support for the elderly.

The students organised several service activities at the old age home and entertained the residents with cultural programmes. Their performances brought cheer to the elderly, while the interaction between the students and senior citizens helped foster a sense of affection and belonging. The initiative also provided an opportunity for the youth to understand the needs of older persons and recognise the importance of extending support and companionship to them.

Addressing the gathering, Race Fatima called upon students to develop respect for elders and make service to senior citizens an integral part of their lives.

She emphasised the need to show affection, care and compassion towards older persons. District Youth Officer T Aijaiah said such initiatives would help instil cultural values and traditions among the younger generation.

He urged the youth to uphold the values of love, respect and affection for elders while actively participating in social service activities.

As part of the celebrations, the youth took part in tree plantation, yoga sessions and service activities for the elderly. Fruits were distributed to the residents of the old age home.

The organisers said such programmes would help strengthen bonds between generations and encourage young people to contribute to the welfare of senior citizens. Srinu and Hemanth, along with students and other participants, took part in the programme.
