Sudden downpour soaks paddy in Suryapet
Suryapet: Paddy brought for sale at the Tirumalagiri Agricultural Market in Suryapet district was soaked by untimely rain on Saturday evening, causing losses to farmers.
Despite large quantities of paddy arriving at the market over the past week, delays in procurement have left farmers facing severe difficulties. Paddy stored at the premises of commission agents was also damaged by the sudden downpour.
Although the weather remained sunny throughout the day, rain fell unexpectedly in the evening, leaving farmers with little time to protect their produce. Farmers expressed concern that the moisture could affect the quality of the paddy and lead to further delays in procurement.
With huge quantities of paddy arriving at the market, authorities had declared a holiday on Friday to control congestion. However, a large volume of produce arrived again on Saturday, making it difficult to conduct weighing operations and complete procurement on time.
Farmers demanded that the paddy soaked by the rain be purchased immediately without imposing additional restrictions or conditions. They appealed to the government and officials to provide immediate assistance to those who had suffered losses.
To prevent further delays, farmers urged the authorities to deploy additional staff and arrange more weighing machines at the market. They also called for adequate infrastructure, including sheds, temporary protective covers and proper drainage facilities, to safeguard the paddy arriving at the market from rain.
Farmers said timely procurement and better protective arrangements were essential to prevent further losses and ensure that their hard-earned produce did not go to waste.
