‘Gandhi, Shastri’s lives inspire truth, simplicity, national service’

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Friday paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries and said their lives inspire people to uphold truth, simplicity, dedication to duty and national service. Patel offered floral tributes to Gandhi and Shastri here at the Jan Bhavan (formerly Raj Bhavan).
“Today is a very important day for the country. We are celebrating the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. The lives of both great personalities inspire us towards truth, simplicity, dedication to duty and national service,” Patel said.
Referring to Gandhi’s favourite bhajan “Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye”, the governor said its words embody important values of life and urged officials and employees to understand its message and incorporate it into their lives.
“We should identify our shortcomings and continuously strive to overcome them and resolve to perform our duties in accordance with established values,” she said, according to a Jan Bhavan statement. Patel also stressed that cleanliness should become part of the regular work culture rather than remain limited to campaigns.
She called for clean workplaces, timely disposal of waste and avoiding unnecessary pendency of files. The governor also highlighted the importance of teamwork and urged senior officials to ensure that their subordinates feel comfortable working with them, it stated. Referring to her tenure as Gujarat’s education minister, Patel spoke about efforts to preserve places associated with Gandhi and said such historical sites should be developed as centres of inspiration for future generations.
