Chandigarh: The Punjab government on Friday appointed 1992-batch IPS officer Gaurav Yadav as the regular Director General of Police (DGP), an official order said. Yadav was appointed as the officiating DGP by the Bhagwant Mann government in July 2022. Notably, this ends prolonged uncertainty over the appointment to the post of regular DGP. His tenure shall be for a minimum period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office, the order said.

Recently, the Punjab and Haryana High Court, while hearing a PIL, had directed the state to take an appropriate decision on the appointment of a regular DGP, observing an ad hoc arrangement ought not to be allowed for an indefinite period. The court had fixed the next hearing in the matter for October 13. The petitioner had submitted that the post of DGP has continued to be held through an arrangement of additional charge since July 2022

. After the state government on Friday issued the order for Yadav’s appointment, Punjab police, in a post on X, said Gaurav Yadav has assumed charge as Director General of Police (Head of Police Force), Punjab. Yadav’s name was among the three officers empanelled by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for appointment as the regular DGP from a panel of 14 senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers sent by the state government. Special DGP Sharad Satya Chauhan and senior IPS officer Harpreet Singh Sidhu were the other two officers on the panel sent by the UPSC.

Yadav on Friday said the police is committed to maintaining peace and harmony, asserting that gangsters and anti-social elements have no place in the state. Yadav’s remarks came shortly after the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government appointed him as the regular DGP.

“I reiterate the commitment of Punjab Police to maintain peace and harmony in Punjab. Anti-national elements will not be allowed to succeed in their nefarious designs,” DGP said in a video message. Yadav further said there is no place for gangsters and anti-social elements in Punjab. “Wherever they hide, whether anywhere in India or abroad, Punjab Police will arrest them and bring them to justice. Operations against gangsters and their networks will be intensified,” he said.
