New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday launched his strongest attack yet over the Opposition’s “vote chori” campaign, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat of undermining the country’s democracy. Gandhi described what he alleged had been done to the country as “treason” and warned that every person responsible would face investigation, insisting that “nobody will be spared”.

Rahul Gandhi and party MP Priyanka Gandhi have been taken into police custody.

Gandhi’s remarks came after more than 300 Opposition MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including members of the BJD, attempted to march to the Election Commission of India office but were stopped by a heavy Delhi Police deployment. The MPs wanted to meet the CEC and the Election Commissioners to raise their concerns, but were prevented from reaching the Commission headquarters.

Speaking to reporters roughly 50 yards from the ECI office, Gandhi questioned the decision to stop elected representatives from meeting the poll panel. “We wanted to meet the CEC and the Election Commissioners, but we were stopped and prevented from going there,” he said. After the march was halted, Gandhi, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi and several other Opposition leaders staged a dharna inside Akashvani Bhavan, which is located next to the Election Commission office.

Gandhi said the fact that more than 300 MPs could be stopped from meeting Election Commissioners raised fundamental questions about the functioning of democracy. “Don’t know why 300 MPs were stopped. And we have been made to sit here just 50 yards away from the ECI office,” he said, questioning what purpose democracy served if elected MPs could not meet the country’s Election Commissioners. Turning his attack towards the alleged manipulation of electoral processes, Gandhi claimed that democracy had been “hijacked” through what he repeatedly described as “vote chori”. He accused Modi, Shah and Bhagwat of being involved, with Gyanesh Kumar allegedly facilitating the process. Gandhi said the issue was no longer confined to Opposition parties and claimed that people across the country were aware of what was happening. “The entire country knows that it has been hijacked by Modi, Shah, Bhagwat with the help of Gyanesh Kumar through ‘vote chori’,” Gandhi said. He claimed that even police personnel deployed at the protest had told him they knew what was happening in the country. Gandhi further asserted that investigations would be conducted against those he named.

BJP MP and national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi accused the Congress of backing voting rights for absentee, relocated, deceased and duplicate voters without verification and questioned who the party intended to benefit through such a stance.
