Two killed, several feared trapped in Chawri Bazaar
New Delhi: A three-storey building under construction collapsed in Old Delhi’s Chawri Bazaar area on Thursday morning, killing two people and injuring another, while five to six others were feared trapped beneath the rubble. The incident took place at around 10:15 am in Gali 17 , Sheesh Mahal, in the Pavalana locality, opposite Chawri Bazaar Metro Station. The collapse triggered an extensive rescue operation, with multiple emergency agencies rushing to the congested neighbourhood.
Delhi Fire Services deployed six emergency units to the spot, comprising three water tenders, one water bowser, a Quick Response Vehicle and an Incident Response Team. Senior officials also reached the location to oversee the operation.
Rescue personnel faced difficulties accessing the site and clearing the debris because of the area’s extremely narrow lanes, raising concerns about the safe evacuation of anyone still trapped inside.
Recalling the terrifying moments, local resident Mohammad Naeem said the building collapsed with a loud noise while residents were asleep. He said the incident occurred around 9 am or 9:30 am, following which people rushed outside, initially believing that their own houses had fallen. They later discovered
that the neighbouring building, which had been under construction for the past three to four months, had collapsed.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and extended condolences to the bereaved families. She said teams from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services and Delhi Police had been mobilised and were conducting rescue operations on a war footing.
