Vijayawada: CPM State secretary V Srinivasa Rao has urged the State government to immediately declare drought-hit mandals and announce a special relief package for farmers and agricultural workers, alleging that the drought situation in the State was worsening.
He alleged that 54% of crops had been damaged in the State and demanded that the Centre declare the situation a national disaster and provide Rs 1 lakh crore relief package. Addressing a press conference at Balotsav Bhavan in Vijayawada along with CPM State secretariat member B Balaram on Sunday, Srinivasa Rao disclosed the resolutions adopted at the party’s State committee meeting, chaired by State secretariat member K Lokanatham.
Srinivasa Rao said Left parties had visited drought-affected areas and highlighted the difficulties being faced by farmers, tenant farmers and agricultural labourers.
He questioned whether Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and Minister Nara Lokesh had no time to visit drought-hit areas and interact with affected people. He said the government had indicated that drought mandals would be declared by October 1 following pressure from farmers’, agricultural workers’ and tenant farmers’ organisations, which have called for protests on September 21.
Srinivasa Rao said the CPM supported the proposed agitations and sought loan waivers, 200 days of employment under the rural employment guarantee scheme with wages of at least Rs 310 a day, Rs 50,000 compensation for each tenant farmer family and fodder centres for cattle.
On land issues, he demanded public scrutiny of lands covered under Section 22-A and restoration of assignment committees. He also sought house sites for all eligible applicants and urged the government to ensure that assigned lands were protected from encroachment and freehold conversions were properly scrutinised.
