Vijayawada: NTR district collector Dr G Lakshmisha has appreciated the initiatives of the Crafts Council of Andhra Pradesh (CCAP) for promoting the State’s rich handloom and handicraft traditions and extending support to weavers and artisans.
The collector, along with his wife, CCAP secretary S Ranjana and vice-chairperson B Sujatha, inaugurated a Handloom Bazaar organised by the CCAP at PVP Square Mall in Vijayawada on Thursday. The bazaar is being held from October 1 to 4, from 9.30 am to 8.30 pm, to mark Gandhi Jayanthi. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Lakshmisha said handlooms and handicrafts were an integral part of the State’s culture and traditions. Such initiatives would help create awareness among the younger generation and ensure that traditional arts and crafts were preserved for future generations, he said.
He appreciated the CCAP’s efforts to promote the sustainable development of handloom and handicrafts without a profit motive. The Council was working to create awareness on the welfare of weavers and artisans, design development, training and marketing, he said.
The collector said handloom products from Venkatagiri, Pochampally and Pedana, besides traditional handicrafts, were being promoted through special programmes.
He said the government was also implementing several initiatives for the preservation and promotion of handlooms and handicrafts.
He said the National Sale of Articles of Rural Artisans Society (SARAS) Aajeevika Mela would be organised in Vijayawada soon and noted that efforts were also being made to preserve the unique artistic traditions of Kondapalli and Etikoppaka. CCAP members and others participated in the programme.
