Vijayawada: YSRCP president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday said the arrest of CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka would only aggravate the situation over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, drawing a sharp reaction from Andhra Pradesh BJP president P V N Madhav, who accused the former chief minister of exposing his “true agenda” by backing the organisation.

Calling for the restoration of trust in the electoral process, Jagan said the arrests would not resolve the concerns surrounding the revision of electoral rolls.

Das and Ranka were arrested and lodged in Tihar Jail for allegedly violating their peace bonds and entering Jantar Mantar on Tuesday after the venue had been denotified as a protest site. “Trust in the electoral process must be restored. The arrests of Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka do not solve anything; it only aggravates the situation,” Jagan said in a post on X.

Empathising with the arrested leaders, he said a proactive approach would yield better results than a reactive one, adding that the system had a flaw that needed to be corrected.

Jagan had earlier raised doubts over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) following the YSRCP’s crushing defeat in the 2024 elections, in which the party won just 11 Assembly and four Lok Sabha seats. He had demanded a return to ballot papers.

Reacting to Jagan’s remarks, Madhav questioned the association between CJP, which claims to champion democracy and fight corruption, and the YSRCP chief, who is facing cases involving the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Madhav alleged that the previous YSRCP government had witnessed temple demolitions, the burning of a chariot, desecration of statues and encroachment of temple properties. He also accused Jagan of encouraging religious conversions and damaging the state’s finances.

The BJP state unit chief claimed that Jagan’s support for CJP had exposed his real intentions and alleged that the organisation was aligned with forces seeking to weaken the country.
