Rs 5.84 Crore Gold and Currency Seizure in Vijayawada, five held

Customs officials have seized foreign-origin gold and foreign currency worth Rs 5.84 crore in a smuggling operation linked to Hyderabad. Five people have been arrested.

Investigators found that a gang was bringing gold from Bangladesh through Kolkata to Hyderabad. In a separate interception, officials stopped a Scorpio on the outskirts of Vijayawada and found foreign currency concealed in secret compartments. Two people were in the vehicle.

Police also detained three people travelling towards Hyderabad by bus at a toll plaza. They were carrying about 3.1kg of gold bars in their bags and strapped around their waists.

The seizure comprised 3,147.1g of gold, US$60,000 and €21,500.
