Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has intensified the removal of water hyacinth and other waste accumulated in city canals in the wake of recent rains and cyclonic weather conditions. On Thursday, sanitation and maintenance teams, led by VMC Biologist Suryakumar Naik, undertook a clearance drive in the Budameru canal stretch near Gunadala and Carmel Nagar on the directions of Municipal Commissioner HM Dhyanachandra.

Speaking on the occasion, Suryakumar Naik said the civic body was regularly removing water hyacinth and other waste deposited in canals due to the recent cyclone. Similar operations were carried out in the Bandar, Eluru and Ryves canals using long-arm tractor machines to ensure the smooth flow of water and prevent inconvenience to residents.

He said special measures were also being taken to prevent rainwater from stagnating in vacant plots and open spaces following rainfall over the past two days. Anti-larval oil was being sprayed in waterlogged areas to prevent mosquito breeding and reduce the risk of vector-borne diseases, he added.

The VMC was taking continuous steps to maintain clean and healthy surroundings in the city, particularly during the rainy season, Suryakumar Naik said. The civic body was closely monitoring vulnerable locations and undertaking timely clearance and preventive measures to safeguard public health.
