Bank strike from Sept 28 to 30
New Delhi: The Union Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) and seven other unions representing about 90% of India's banking workforce have proposed a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30, the second such action after an earlier one-day strike on September 11. The core demand remains a five-day working week, which was agreed to in principle during the March 2024 wage settlement but has not yet been implemented. The unions are also seeking pension revisions, a uniform formula for pensioners, an option for employees covered under the National Pension System (NPS) to switch back to the old pension scheme, and the abolition of the revised performance-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.
September 26 and 27 fall on a weekend immediately before the proposed strike, potentially resulting in five consecutive days of disruption to branch banking services.
The Union Finance Minister has called a meeting with chief executives of public sector banks, regional rural banks, the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and NABARD to finalise contingency measures to keep essential banking services running during the strike period.
