Five injured after wall collapses during student gathering in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: Five persons were injured after a supporting wall collapsed during a gathering at a Sabha Bhavan here on Saturday, police said.

The injured were admitted to Highland Hospital in Mangaluru, according to Commissioner of Police Anupam Agarwal.

Those injured have been identified as Mohammed Shamaj, 16, Mohammed Shanan Ahmed, 18, Haneef, 23, Dawood Farsin Ahmed, 18, and Mohammed Shakeel Hussain, 18.

Police said Shamaj has been shifted to the intensive care unit for further treatment. The hospital authorities said he is in critical condition.

Preliminary information suggested that a number of students had gathered at the venue for a programme related to the ceremony of office-bearers. Due to overcrowding, some students were standing in a corridor when they reportedly leaned against a supporting wall.

The wall, which was apparently weak, collapsed, causing the students to fall and sustain injuries.

Police are ascertaining the circumstances leading to the collapse.
