MANGALURU: The Geological Survey of India (GSI), Marine and Coastal Survey Division, Mangaluru, will organise an e-waste collection drive from October 21 to 23 to promote scientific disposal and recycling of discarded electrical and electronic equipment.
According to an appeal made by the GSI here today, which was released to the press, The drive, being held as part of the Special Campaign initiative, is open to employees and members of the public. It is being organised in association with Bengaluru-based 4R Recyclers, a government-registered recycler.
People can bring discarded computers, laptops, printers, UPS units, mobile phones, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, televisions, voltage stabilisers and other electrical or battery-operated appliances.
The initiative aims to prevent environmental pollution and encourage the safe disposal of electronic waste, which can contain hazardous substances capable of contaminating soil and water if handled improperly. Recycling through authorised channels also helps recover reusable materials and conserve resources.
The recycler will offer payment at applicable rates, depending on the type and condition of the items accepted. Payments will be made through UPI or bank transfer, subject to the details provided by participants.
The collection centre will be located on the ground floor of the GSI's Marine and Coastal Survey Division office at Pandeshwar, opposite Srinivas University, Mangaluru. The drive will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on all three days.
The public has been urged to use the facility and avoid storing discarded electronic equipment at home or disposing of it indiscriminately. (eom)
