Maharashtra Baby Trafficking Case: Couple Allegedly Sells Infant For Rs 1.2 Lakh, 7 Arrested

A disturbing case of child trafficking has come to light out of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra where the couple is alleged to have sold their baby son for Rs 1.2 lakh. Later, the police recovered that the baby and got to know that the baby had been allegedly purchased and sold several times in Maharashtra and Telangana.

The parents and seven others have been arrested, including the child. Police are also looking into if the incident was linked to a wider child trafficking ring operating across the country.

Baby Allegedly Sold For Rs 1.2 Lakh

According to police, the child’s parents were living together in the Mukundwadi area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The couple allegedly handed over their infant to an intermediary in exchange for Rs 1.2 lakh.

Reports said the money was allegedly used by the parents to purchase a mobile phone and jewellery. The allegation is part of the ongoing police investigation.

The case came to light after the child’s mother approached police on September 20 following an alleged assault. During the investigation, police uncovered information suggesting that the infant had been sold.

Infant Resold Multiple Times

Police said the child did not remain with the first buyer. Investigators allegedly found that the infant was subsequently transferred through several people, with the baby being sold multiple times.

According to reports, the child eventually reached Hyderabad, more than 550 km from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The infant was reportedly sold for as much as Rs 3.5 lakh during the chain of transactions.

Police rescued the child on Sunday and are now tracing the individuals involved in the alleged trafficking chain.

Seven People Arrested

Police have arrested seven people, including the infant’s biological parents and others allegedly involved in the transfer and resale of the child.

An FIR was registered at Mukundwadi police station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to wrongful concealment or confinement and child trafficking, along with Section 81 of the Juvenile Justice Act.

Authorities are questioning the accused to determine how the child was transferred between different locations and whether other people were involved.

Police Probe Possible Interstate Trafficking Network

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Police Commissioner Pravin Pawar said the investigation began after police received information about the alleged sale of the baby.

Investigators are now examining the transactions and links between the people involved in Maharashtra and Telangana. Police are also looking into whether the case is an isolated incident or part of a wider child trafficking network.

The rescued child is currently in the care of authorities as the investigation continues.

Investigation Underway

The case has raised concerns over the vulnerability of infants to organised trafficking and illegal child transfers. Police are continuing to record statements and establish the complete sequence of events, including the circumstances in which the child was allegedly sold and subsequently moved between states.

The allegations against the arrested individuals will be subject to the ongoing investigation and judicial proceedings.
