Women outnumber men in Mizoram's final electoral rolls again

Aizawl: Like few other Northeastern states, women voters once again outnumbered their male counterparts in Mizoram’s final electoral rolls following the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across the state, officials said.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Garima Gupta said that with July 1, 2026, as the qualifying date, Mizoram now has a total of 8,35,869 registered voters, comprising 4,32,689 women, 4,03,179 men, and one third-gender elector. The gender ratio of 1,073 in the final electoral rolls of the Christian majority Mizoram is significantly higher than the national average.

The CEO said that before SIR, there was a total of 8,75,068 electors against whom Enumeration Forms were distributed. Out of this, a total of 8,28,906 Enumeration Forms were collected, and 46,162 Enumeration Forms were not received.

After completion of the Enumeration phase under SIR, the draft roll was published on July 4, 2026, with a total number of 8,28,906 electors, she told the media.

Electoral Registration Officers and Asst Electoral Registration Officers received and disposed of claims and objections from July 4 to September 2, 2026. The Enumeration Forms received during the Enumeration Phase were also scrutinized during this period.

According to Gupta, against the draft roll of 8,28,906 electors, a total of 39,243 electors (4.73 per cent) were added and 32,280 electors (3.89 per cent) were deleted resulting in a net increase of 6,963 electors (0.84 per cent) in the final rolls, published simultaneously in 11 districts across the state on Monday.

She said that the publication of the final electoral roll was originally scheduled by the Election Commission for September 6, 2026. However, as the scheduled date fell on a Sunday, the publication was rescheduled to Monday at the request of the CEO, Mizoram.

Mountainous Mizoram has 40 Assembly constituencies. The assembly constituency with the highest number of voters is Tuichawng (ST) of Lawngtlai District with 37,236 electors while West Tuipui (ST) of Lunglei District has the lowest electors of 14,667.

The CEO said that in accordance with the instructions of the Election Commission of India on May 14, 2026, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls, 2026 was undertaken in all 11 districts of Mizoram with effect from May 20, 2026.

Mizoram is one of the 16 states and two Union Territories included in the third phase of the SIR, 2026, she added.

CEO Gupta had earlier said that Mizoram has become the first among the 16 states and two Union Territories to undertake the SIR of electoral rolls to achieve 100 per cent digitisation of the enumeration process.
