Special units will tackle organised crime: DGP

Bhubaneswar: Odisha police is planning to set up special units in all districts to deal with organised and sensitive crime cases, DGP Vinaytosh Mishra said on Saturday.

Speaking to media persons in Sambalpur on the sidelines of a passing-out parade of constable trainees, Mishra said, “We are planning to set up a special unit in every police district under the direct control of the SP concerned to deal with organised and specific crimes.”

The officers in the police stations are busy maintaining local law and order and routine crimes. So, they do not get enough time for proper investigation of organised or inter-state crimes, he said. The DGP said that Odisha police is giving much emphasis to combat cybercrimes and illegal sale and distribution of drugs.

Several initiatives, including special drives and awareness campaigns, are being taken to make the State free from drugs, he said. Similarly, cybercrime has emerged as a major challenge for the police department now. To deal with the emerging situation, the government has set up cyber police stations in every district this year, while a State cyber command coordination centre has been notified and will be set up soon.

The Odisha police’s recovery of stolen mobile phones has increased from 7 per cent to 27 per cent, he said, adding, “We are targeting to take it to 50 per cent by December end.” Mishra advised people not to click unknown links or reply to unknown messages. “If you aren’t familiar with the online system or internet, please don’t try it yourself, especially for financial transactions,” he appealed.

The DGP attended the passing-out parade of the fifth batch of constable trainees in Sambalpur. A total of 1,027 trainees have completed their training at the Basic Training Institute (BTI), Burla.

Mishra congratulated all the trainees and asked them to remain prepared to face various challenges with courage in the future. He advised them to maintain a friendly attitude towards the public.
