Kill woman, damage crops

Chittoor: Wild elephants once again went amuck on Tuesday in Kuppam mandal of Chittoor district, killing a woman and trampling crops. She was identified as Obamma (55). The pachyderms attacked her when she went to forest to collect firewood. Recently, the wild elephants killed a farmer.

The elephants are increasingly straying into the mandal from forests in Karnataka. As they are unable to secure vegetation to eat, they often go on the rampage and ravage crops. The worst-hit areas are Kuppam, Gudapalli, Ramakuppam and Santipuram mandals, besides Palamaner constituency. The animals are straying into these areas as they are abutting forests in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Farmers in these areas depend on horticulture for their livelihood. They have adopted drip irrigation technology to raise plantations in these drought-prone areas. The pachyderms are increasingly straying into Chittoor district from Hosur forest areas in Karantaka, as labourers drive them out to harvest tamarind trees.

According to statistics available with the Forest department, 48 persons were killed by wild elephants in the district since 1985. Not less than 100 persons were trampled by them on the Andhra Pradesh-Karnataka border. The loss to crops and horticulture plantations was immeasurable. The Forest officials have become alert following the death of Obamma, with reports suggesting that at least 35 wild elephants are moving in the forest area.
