Vijayawada: Chief Secretary I Y R Krishna Rao, accompanied by Director General of Police J V Ramudu visited the city on Tuesday to monitor arrangements for the Collectors Conference scheduled for Wednesday. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will preside over the meeting.

Krishna Rao and Ramudu explored the possibilities of holding the Republic Day celebrations at VR Siddhartha Engineering College at Kanuru, on the outskirts of the city. Later, they announced that Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium was chosen for holding first Republic Day celebrations in the Andhra Pradesh post bifurcation of the State.

The Chief Secretary said Governor E S L Narasimhan would participate in the Republic Day celebrations at the IGMC Stadium. Tableaux highlighting the welfare schemes and development programmes of the State government would be displayed during the Republic Day parade. A variety of cultural programmes would also be staged.

The DGP said special seating arrangements would be made at the stadium as about 30,000 people are expected to participate in the Republic Day celebrations. Responding to a question on the establishment of DGP camp office in the city, he said the proposal was sent to the State government for consideration.

Krishna district In-charge Collector J Murali, Additional DGP Gautam Sawang of APSP Battalion, Information and Public Relations Department Commissioner N V Ramana Reddy, Police Commissioner A B Venkateswara Rao, Municipal Commissioner C Hari Kiran and Sub-Collector S Nagalakshmi accompanied the Chief Secretary.
