On Sunday, the Communist Party of India-Marxist elected senior politburo member Sitaram Yechury as the new General Secretary who will be replacing Prakash Karat who completed three terms as the General Secretary.

The official decision of the leadership change in the CPI (M) was taken on the last day of the six-day party congress meet held in Visakhapatnam.

The names were recommended by the Party's politburo to the new Central Committee (CC) on Saturday night and the outgoing CC gave a go ahead for the names to the incoming CC which was placed before the Congress, who took the final call.

The frontrunners for taking the top spot of the party were Sitaram Yechury and S Ramachandran Pillai but with Mr Pillai deciding to withdraw from the race, the decision was clear; the election of Yechury, who is the party’s leader in the Rajya Sabha and a member of the politburo, ended weeks of speculation over who would take over the reins of the Marxist party.
