Visakhapatnam: Though the Andhra University authorities are keen to complete the modern Convention Centre, first of its kind in the State, by December 25, as was directed by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, but it seems that it would take some more time for completion since the air-conditioning ducts and censor-based fire fighting works are still going on.
The Convention Centre was designed by the members of the Andhra University Architecture Alumni Association with a carved seating arrangement for 2,000 people. Estimated with a cost of Rs 5 crore, foundation stone was laid for the centre in 2011 when Prof Beela Satyanarayana was the Vice-Chancellor and Prof PVGD Prasada Reddy was the registrar.
Later, with funds crunch, the project was stalled after completing the outer structure and soon after Prof GSN Raju assuming charge as Vice-Chancellor, the work was revived with the available funds. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed his unhappiness at a review meeting here recently pointing out that there were no major convention centres though Vizag becoming a Smart City.
When he was apprised about the AU Convention Centre, the Chief Minister, along with the ministers and AU authorities, visited the centre which was under construction and assured that the State government would provide necessary funds for its completion. He asked the authorities to complete the project by December 25 and recently, the government has released the funds.
When contacted, Andhra University deputy executive engineer D Raja Sekhar Raju informed that AC and fire fighting, landscaping, roads levelling and parking lot works are going on.
He said that soon after demarcation of landscaping and internal roads, the VUDA horticulture wing will take care of entire beautification work with plantation. He said that work on the ‘Walkways’ inside the centre is going on to help rectify any fault of lighting or AC in future easily.
“The total centre roof was covered with pure zinc and rust-proof sheets specially imported from France to ensure long durability and the sheets were fixed without using bolts and nuts.
Carved seating gallery with latest sound system is the specialty of the centre. The spacious parking lot will accommodate at least 500 cars and nearly 300 two-wheelers.
“We are all on the job round- the-clock under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor Prof Raju, registrar Prof V Umamaheswara Rao and chief engineer Madhava Babu to complete the project at the earliest”, he explained.
