Visakhapatnam: The three-day Araku Utsav was off to a colourful start on Friday with Minister for HRD Ganta Srinivasa Rao lighting the lamp. The inaugural function was held at the tribal museum at Araku valley

Speaking on the occasion he assured the local people that the TDP government will develop the area to improve the lifestyle of the tribals. “Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is focused on the development of the agency and has adopted a village close to the valley,” he added.

He said the coffee plantation will be expanded with Rs 526 crore, which would improve the quality of the life of the tribals. “The government has taken up several tourism projects in the area which would provide employment to tribal youth,” he stated. The Minister said that an archery school of international standards and high altitude resorts at Lambasinghi would soon come up in the area.

Meanwhile, the district unit of CPM strongly condemned the arrests of several tribal youth. The youth were taken into custody as the district administration suspected they would stall the inaugural function. District secretary K Lokanadham alleged that the festival was being held without involvement of the local tribals. Condemning the arrest of tribal youth, he said that the police were harassing them.
