Vijayawada: The Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (SPDCL) Vijayawada division is waiting for the sanction of funds for construction of cement pillars and platforms to install the transformers. Installing transformers on cement pillars is the latest trend adopted by SPDCL for the safety of local residents.

Construction of cement pillars to install transformers

As part of the ‘Smart city’ programme, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has decided to sanction Rs 100 crore for construction of cement pillars for installation of transformers in the city. The city also looks beautiful as old electrical poles will be removed and new cement structures will be constructed in the city for installation of transformers.

The SPDCL has been changing the design for installation of transformers over the years. Initially the transformers were arranged to the electrical iron polls. Later, the transformers were arranged on the cement structures, which are about three metres tall from the ground level. A square type structures were constructed for setting up of the transformers.

Finally, the SPDCL has started construction of pillar and platform for setting up of the transformer. It is very economical and takes less time to complete the work. The transformers are arranged above three meters from the ground for the safety of local residents. It is estimated that more than 200 transformers in the city are still connected to the iron poles.

These transformers are unsafe with open fuse boxes. Dozens of transformers in the city have no fencing. These insecure transformers pose a threat to the children. Due to lack of playground facility, children play cricket in the streets in many parts of the city. While playing the game, sometimes children may rush towards the transformers and can contact with dangerous electrical wires or objects.

Luckily, not such incidents occurred in the city. To avoid such problems, installation of transformer in cement pillar and platform is the only solution to the department. When contacted, the Town divisional engineer, SPDCL, A Murali Mohan said the department is ready to install all transformers on cement platforms, which were built on cement pillars.

If the State government allocates funds as part of the smart city programme, unsafe transformers can be placed on cement platforms.
The divisional engineer said the department had already started installation of transformers on cement pillars in many parts of the city. But due to funds shortage, it is going at very slow pace. If the State government sanctions funds, the work will be completed quickly before the Krishna Pushkaralu.
