Ganja seized from ambulance; two held

Visakhapatnam: The excise officials seized 190 kgs of ganja hidden in an ambulance belonging to the primary health centre of Lambasinghi in Marripalem village under Narsipatnam mandal on Saturday. Two persons were arrested in this connection.

They were identified as M Venkatraju, driver of the ambulance, and G Adinarayana, smuggler, both the accused hail from Lammasingi area in Chintapalle mandal of Vizag Agency. This is second such case in which ganja was carried in an ambulance. In the earlier case, the excise personnel of Paderu seized 360 kgs dry ganja in an ambulance belonging to the primary health centre, Pedabayalu in August 2014.

Excise Inspector of Narsipatnam BVG Raju said that hemp was procured from remote areas in Chintapalle. Raju said that ambulance was sponsored by Araku MP Kothapalli Geetha under the MPLADS. The smuggler with the support of the ambulance driver neatly packed the contraband in the ambulance presuming that the ambulance will not be checked by enforcement officials.

Acting on a tip-off, the excise officials intercepted the ambulance near Marripalem check-post and arrested the duo and seized the ganja along with ambulance. The smuggler was to hand over the contraband to a person near Yerravaram.

The driver of the ambulance told reporters that he was offered Rs 35,000 for the transport of ganja from Lammasingi to Yerravaram. The excise officials registered a case under various Sections of NDPS Act and took up investigation.
